Life After College

T he biggest misconception recent graduate students have is that within the span of a few months, they will have entered and started their career. While this may rain true for most, others fall victim to such a myth. I will have to shamelessly admit that fall within that percent of myth believers.

My plans for after college were quite vague. It began with entering the job of my dreams at entry so that i can move up the ranks, save enough money to finally purchase the Macbook Pro I desperately needed, save enough to move out and start my independent future my family knew i was headed for. Life on the other hand had different plans for me. As soon as school ended a friend recommended that i work at a local yet not so local day camp. At first I was against the idea but without an acceptance from a job in sight I had to go with something i was awe to familiar with. Working with children. I found myself traveling to places I never thought i would visit like Busch Gardens and a sushi restaurant. For those who know me, they know sushi would NEVER be on my go to places. But it was an experience I do not regret. I thought to myself that this was an opportunity where I could truly step out of my comfort zone and inspire young girls. An act I know is dear to my heart.

However, as day camp experience was coming to an end i had to set out for another new beginning. With my future in the entertainment/ broadcast industry still bleak working towards entering the field left me slightly depressed and quite disappointed in myself. I was editing my resume and cover letter more than i expected. I received rejection after rejection and I got to the point where child care jobs seem to be the only acceptance. But I did not want to settle for a job that did not pertain to my degree. I lessen my feelings of despair I applied my efforts toward internship opportunities. To my surprise I have finally geared my accomplishments to an organization called Established in 88. This allowed me to help grow a start up multi-media production company that showcases and empowers individuals to maximize their creative art abilities through culturally diverse platforms, community involvement and advocacy. . With established in 88, I can not only highlight my Caribbean heritage through my work but i can shape a new perspective of what it takes to start a business. I am still taking small steps months after graduation but the reflection process was the beginning of my journey. While I am still finding myself and applying to full time jobs, I am still honing my skills and perfecting my craft.

In short, the path towards your dreams WILL NOT be as you planned. Detours may find its way on your path but remember it takes hard work and patience before you see the light at the end. Remain humble and analyze what makes you unique. Evaluate your values but DON'T QUIT! Trust the process because in a matter of months you'll be looking back at this time of your life and say to your self, "It was apart of the plan and the timing was perfect."

To my recent graduates looking for some motivation or simply need some guidance at this time in your life, below is a guideline to help you make sure your job search is more effective.

I wish you luck !

As always,

BE TRUE, STAY YOU & I'M GOING TO
